mobile cloud storage Storage space for our files has always been an issue. It was only a few years ago that many of us carried around small thumb-sized flash drives and the occasional chunky external hard drive. These days, however, most of us simply use one cloud service or another, and just recently, Motorola and Nokia have started bundling free cloud storage with their phones.

Moto X Users to Get 50 GB of Storage on Google Drive for Two Years

In case you missed it, Motorola just officially announced their brand new flagship phone, the much-awaited Moto X. Lost in all the specs and software features though of the official release is the 50 GB of storage that users can get for two years through Google Drive. According to Android Community:

With your purchase of the new Moto X, from any of the 5 carriers all supporting the just announced smartphone, you’ll instantly get 2 years of Cloud Storage absolutely free. Google will toss you a quick 50GB to go along with the 16 or 32GB of internal storage, so you should rarely be out of space.

Since they own Motorola, it makes sense for Google to try and entice users into switching from whatever cloud storage service they currently have to start using their own Google Drive service. After all, it’s no secret that a lot of users will sign up for multiple accounts so they can keep their cloud storage service free. Google is probably banking on the possibility that Moto X users will get used to the convenience of a single sign-in and start paying for the service once the two years are up.

Lumia Owners Get Free 7 GB of SkyDrive Storage with Option to Upgrade

Nokia is also offering their Lumia users free cloud storage on SkyDrive but are taking a different approach to Google’s with the Moto X. Adam Fraser of Nokia says that:

Every Nokia Lumia smartphone comes with 7GB of free storage via SkyDrive so you’ve always got access to your files, even if you change your device.

So rather than giving users a large chunk of cloud storage space that forces you to make a decision to start paying or not after two years, Nokia gives users lifetime access to 7 GB of storage with the option to upgrade up 100 GB if they want more.

Why so Much Fuss About Cloud Storage on Smartphones?

The thought of having all of your important and personal files on a device that is so easily lost or stolen can be scary, so it’s nice to see major phone manufacturers bundling cloud storage on at least some of their devices. With cloud storage, Priya Viswanathan writes that:

Since all your data is stored in the cloud, backing it up and restoring the same is relatively much easier than storing the same on a physical device. Furthermore, most cloud service providers are usually competent enough to handle recovery of information. Hence, this makes the entire process of backup and recovery much simpler than other traditional methods of data storage.

The demand for large capacity cloud storage is increasing and interest among end level consumers is growing much faster while enterprise level customers remain cautious about entrusting their data to third parties. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the larger cloud storage providers are partnering with major phone manufacturers to target consumers like you and me. Cloud providers like Google and Nokia have an advantage though, as they can push their cloud storage services through their own mobile phones rather than have to partner with other phone companies for the best cloud storage.
